Turning Public Investment Into Community Engagement

I designed and led a social media campaign to increase awareness of improvements made through the City of Garland's 2019 Bond Program. THE CHALLENGE Once public projects were completed, the communications challenge shifted from announcing the investment to helping residents understand and experience its value. Rather than simply telling residents that a project was finished, I focused on showing what had changed and why it mattered to them. THE APPROACH I developed a social-first campaign centered on visual storytelling, including: ∘ Short-form video and Reels. ∘ Photography. ∘ Informational and educational posts. ∘ Community-focused messaging. ∘ Digital promotion. ∘ Social-first visual assets. I developed content concepts, messaging, visual assets, photography, video, and the publishing schedule while monitoring performance to understand which formats generated the strongest engagement. One of the strongest-performing pieces generated: 4,845 plays | 296 likes | 11 comments RESULTS The campaign increased visibility and engagement around completed park improvements, contributing to follower growth, increased interaction with renovated parks, and stronger engagement with residents and community partners. According to the Parks Department, interaction and use of renovated parks also increased during the campaign period. WHAT I LEARNED Even informational government communications can be engaging when they are created around the audience rather than the institution. The strategy wasn't simply to announce public investment—it was to make that investment visible, understandable, and relevant to the people it was intended to serve.
