From Individual Expertise to Collective Insight: Building a Multicultural Resource Workgroup

I constructed and proposed the Latino Resource Workgroup at STA to create a more collaborative and sustainable approach to multicultural communications. THE CHALLENGE STA needed to engage Latino communities around organ donation and registration, but cultural knowledge was often concentrated in individual employees. I recognized a potential problem: one person's experience cannot represent an entire community. The opportunity was to create a structure that brought multiple perspectives into the organization's work rather than relying on individual employees to serve as representatives for an entire community. THE APPROACH I developed the concept and infrastructure for a quarterly cross-functional workgroup designed to bring together employees with different experiences and relationships to the Latino community. I created: ∘ Program proposal and presentation deck. ∘ Workgroup visual identity. ∘ Recruitment and invitation materials. ∘ Interest form and FAQs. ∘ Membership and selection guidelines. ∘ Meeting structure and quarterly calendar. ∘ Internal and external initiative planning. ∘ Communication strategy. I also developed a year-round engagement calendar connecting the workgroup to initiatives such as National Donate Life Month, National Multicultural Donor Awareness Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, Día de los Muertos, and community events. The model was designed as the first implementation of a broader framework that could eventually support additional multicultural communities. RESULTS ∘ Formal framework developed for the Latino Resource Workgroup. ∘ Cross-functional model created to bring multiple perspectives into multicultural initiatives. ∘ Recruitment and onboarding system established. ∘ Year-round engagement calendar developed. ∘ Branded communications system created. ∘ Scalable framework established for future multicultural resource groups. WHAT I LEARNED Cultural knowledge is valuable. Representation is collective. Inclusive communications require more than finding a "cultural expert." They require structures that create space for multiple perspectives and allow those perspectives to influence organizational decisions.
