Designing for Everyone: Integrating Accessibility Into Communications
Accessibility has become an integral part of how I approach communications across organizations, audiences, and channels. Rather than treating accessibility as a final quality check, I work to incorporate accessible practices into the communications process from the beginning.
THE CHALLENGE
Communications need to reach people with different visual, auditory, cognitive, and access needs—including people who interact with information through assistive technologies.
I recognized that accessibility is most effective when considered during content development rather than addressed only after a communication has been created.
THE APPROACH
Across City of Garland, Southwest Transplant Alliance, and UT Dallas, I have incorporated accessibility into public-facing, internal, and research communications.
My work includes:
∘ Alt text and image descriptions.
∘ Captions and transcripts.
∘ Accessible social media.
∘ Color contrast.
∘ Typography.
∘ Heading structure.
∘ Accessible web content.
∘ Multimedia accessibility.
∘ Accessibility reviews and corrections.
∘ Resources and checklists for colleagues.
∘ Guidance for content creators and teams.
At UT Dallas, I currently support accessibility across websites, social media, multimedia, research communications, and podcast/video content, advising research labs, podcast teams, and other content owners.
EDUCATION & COLLABORATION
I have worked to make accessibility a shared communications practice rather than an individual responsibility.
By creating resources, reviewing content, and advising colleagues, I have helped teams understand not only what needs to be accessible, but how to incorporate accessibility into their own communications processes.
RESULTS
∘ Greater awareness of digital accessibility among colleagues and content creators.
∘ More accessible public-facing and organizational communications.
∘ Greater consistency in accessibility practices.
∘ Resources and checklists created for content development.
∘ Accessibility considered earlier in the communications process.
∘ Ongoing accessibility guidance across web, social, multimedia, and research communications.
WHAT I LEARNED
Accessibility is most effective when it is built into the process from the beginning.
Rather than asking, "How do we make this accessible?" after something has been created, I ask, "How can we create this so more people can access it from the start?"
For me, inclusive communications means designing with different audiences and access needs in mind from the beginning.
